Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah, is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. In music, film and television Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. a police officer. The couple separated when Latifah turned ten. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. Her mother gave it to her when she was 8. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah is one of the founding participants of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave it back to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah in the early days, was impressed by her song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
